Right around Christmas I tried to purchase the Soul Train Box Set from a local DVD Store that was liquidating due to a lost lease. The guy was closing his store the next day and he still wanted 90 bucks for it. I offered him 40 and he still said no dice. Maybe it's not the most appropriate thing to talk about cheaping out on a person's body of work on the day of their death, but the truth is Don Cornelius' legacy lives on for free every day.

I've already mentioned how much I love Soul Train so I'm not going to sit here and lecture about what an influence it has had on American Culture. Instead, think of that person who introduced you your favorite song; Don Cornelius was that guy for an entire generation. The only problem I ever really had with Soul Train was the horrible lip synching. Marvin Gaye is one of the best performers ever, but make him fake sing to Sexual Healing, and he is as awkward as a chubby white kid singing it in a Montreal karaoke bar during Spring Break 2003... not that I would know.

In honor of the Conductor of the Soul Train, the aforementioned locomotive is making three stops on #EDAS. First up is a young Lionel Ritchie apparently trying to scare away vampires by wearing a wreath of garlic as a member of the Commodores. At the next stop, Don Cornelius flexes his all-time buttery voice in an interview with Aretha Franklin, who is draped in some sort of a hammock, fully exposing her untamed soulful bosom; truly a sight to be seen. The third and final stop is a medley by the man who puts the Soul in Soul Train, James Brown. I included his performance because not even Aretha's flowin' lady-parts can follow the hardest working man in show business... The only person I've seen play the show live, you can't possibly ask the Godfather to fake it.

Don Cornelius is an epic figure in the history of music and through his fans and late night reruns, he was able to inspire me to do a somewhat danceless, bizarro version of his timeless soul showcase. Although he must have been battling some demons, I am more than thankful for his contributions to the music community. Here is his traditional sign-off one last time...

I recently came across an amazing up-and-coming band from my old stomping grounds of Columbus, Ohio. Way Yes is anything but traditional, blending a world of influences to create a unique tropical ambiance, capable of making even the most discerning toe tap for days. I was lucky enough to speak to them about music and chicken fingers on the verge of their Second Anniversary.

EDAS: Congratulationson your Two-Year anniversary as a band. How did Way Yes start and how has thegroup evolved over its lifetime?

Way Yes: Thanks! Timeflies. You could say Way Yes started in Drivers Ed. That's where Glennand I (Travis) met. We bonded over a shared interest in white Chevrolets andRadiohead and have been playing/writing together ever since. In the months leading up to us forming, Glenn and I had been listening toas much African music as we could get our hands on (which, thanks to theInternet, is a ton). We fell in love with the guitar work found in the Soukousmusic of the 1960's and decided to try and imitate that style in our songwriting. The result was the Herringbone EP, a feel-good collection of songs that peoplecould relate to.

After the HerringboneEP ran its course, we became obsessed with Brazilian music. Wefell in love with the artists of the Tropicália movement of the late 1960's.Artists such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and especially Os Mutantes becamebig influences on us pretty immediately. So all of that led up to us recording the Walkability EP. Whereas Herringbone's maininfluence was in the guitars, Walkability's was in the rhythm and percussion.Also, the lyrical themes were a little darker than on Herringbone. We playedthe Walkability songs for a while as a two piece. But the craving for a morefull live sound led us to recruit multi-instrumentalist Max Lewis, whoengineered both the Walkability and Herringbone EPs. He was so familiar withthe material that it was the most logical step to take. After playing with Maxfor a little while he became a full-fledged member.

Our next release wasthe Oranjudio 7" (named after the Columbus studio). Leading up to that recordingwe had been joined by auxiliary percussionist Tim "Timless" Horak.With Oranjudio we really just wanted to get studio recordings of the two songs"Automail" and "Tia". They fit so well together but we hadalready moved on stylistically to new territory and knew that they wouldn'tmake sense with the new material. Shortly after that we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to joinLefse Records. Now we're finishing up writing for our first full length andheading in to the studio at the end of February! So there you go... Way Yes:Unabridged, Unauthorized, and Undressed.

EDAS: Well my dog is named Tia, so I automatically love her new theme song, which can be found both on iTunes and on Spotify. Moving on, I am a formerSon of Columbus and therefore lifetime Buckeye. I loved it, but it is certainlyno tropical paradise. How does C-Bus, factor into your Afro-Brazili-ribbean influenced sounds?

Way Yes: The Columbusweather scene actually does have an influence on our songwriting believe it ornot, but not as much as the music scene. There’s so much going on right now andwe're really excited to be a part of it. On "Singing" fromWalkability we got the chance to collaborate with Sam and Yoni from Maza Blaskawhich made that song what it is. We hope to do a lot more of that in thefuture. But we just want our music to make people feel good whether they'refrom Columbus or an actual tropical paradise such as Myrtle Beach or VirginiaBeach.

EDAS: Wow, I hardly think Myrtle and Virginia Beach can be considered tropical. Sounds like you guys need a band trip to Jamaica or maybe Belize. In the meantime, what are yourfavorite places to go in Columbus?

Way Yes: We love goingto and playing at Kobo and Carabar, both are great venues and bars. As far asfood, you've got to get back here and have Ray Ray's if you haven't already.It's a food truck on N. High St. with the best BBQ. That's all I can think ofright now. The other guys get out a lot more than I do. If I had answeredhonestly I probably would have said my basement and Amazon.com.

EDAS: My favoritespot overall was definitely Roots Records on High Street. That was an amazingreggae oasis. I also used to live above the building that housed Johnny-Go'srecords, where I actually started collecting Vinyl, and Raising Cane's arestaurant that only sold chicken fingers, I used to eat there at least twice aweek. Can you believe that they really only sell Chicken Fingers?

Way Yes: Raising Cane's is a Way Yes tradition. Once a week after practice. Clockwork. Current combo ofchoice: The 3 Finger.

EDAS: You guys wouldbe a HIT in NYC, any chance of a tour in the future?

Way Yes: Thanks anddefinitely! We have plans to head your way towards the end of April actually.We're hoping to do a larger tour once the record is finished. But in themeantime we're just doing little jaunts here and there, including a big second anniversary show this weekend at Carabar!

EDAS: Well I am already waiting for my tickets. What stopswould you be excited to make on Tour?

Way Yes: Reallyexcited to play NYC. Wouldn't mind hitting Portland, OR along with the wholewest coast too. I've never been. I'm excited for the chance to go anywherethough. Being on the road is a lot of fun.

EDAS: I'm sure it is. In today'svolatile musical climate, what do you think is more important, making recordsor touring?

Way Yes: It isvolatile, isn't it?! I think making records is more important. Records are oneof the great art forms in my opinion. Also, the records are what you get toleave behind as tangible proof that you existed. And with the wonders of theInterWeb and Time Capsules there's a good chance they'll always exist in oneform or another. I know records aren't as profitable as they used to be, butthey're at least being listened to by more people than ever. But with thatbeing said, you gotta tour!

EDAS: I totally agree... Records are timeless. Every time I throw one on, I am transported into a vacuum where the songs are able to just permeate every fiber of my soul. Studies are even coming out confirming that music is being consumed at higher rates than ever. What is yourfavorite part about making music?

Way Yes: For me thatwould have to be the actual process of recording. Writing and recording are twothings I don't think I could live without.

EDAS: What can weexpect from Way Yes over the next two years?

Way Yes: You'lldefinitely be seeing a full length album within the next year. A proper tour.Battle of the bands? Raising Canes sponsorship? Sky is the limit.

Imagine a world where you have to worry before talking about your favorite musician, reviewing a local restaurant, or criticizing a political candidate online. With legislation like SOPA and PIPA making its way through the House and Senate, we are on the verge of these worries becoming a realty. These systemic changes would forever allow censors to determine whether a person's thoughts and words deserve to be on the internet. Under the guise of ending Piracy, certain big businesses are pressuring the government to take complete control of the internet rather than adapt to the new economic opportunities and difficulties. Below is an open letter going around from various Artists and Creative Professionals expressing their oppostion to SOPA, PIPA and any similarly oppressive proposals.

An open letter to Washington from Artists and Creators

We, the undersigned, are musicians, actors, directors, authors, and producers. We make our livelihoods with the artistic works we create. We are also Internet users.

We are writing to express our serious concerns regarding the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

As creative professionals, we experience copyright infringement on a very personal level. Commercial piracy is deeply unfair and pervasive leaks of unreleased films and music regularly interfere with the integrity of our creations. We are grateful for the measures policymakers have enacted to protect our works.

We, along with the rest of society, have benefited immensely from a free and open Internet. It allows us to connect with our fans and reach new audiences. Using social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, we can communicate directly with millions of fans and interact with them in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

We fear that the broad new enforcement powers provided under SOPA and PIPA could be easily abused against legitimate services like those upon which we depend. These bills would allow entire websites to be blocked without due process, causing collateral damage to the legitimate users of the same services — artists and creators like us who would be censored as a result.

We are deeply concerned that PIPA and SOPA’s impact on piracy will be negligible compared to the potential damage that would be caused to legitimate Internet services. Online piracy is harmful and it needs to be addressed, but not at the expense of censoring creativity, stifling innovation or preventing the creation of new, lawful digital distribution methods.

We urge Congress to exercise extreme caution and ensure that the free and open Internet, upon which so many artists rely to promote and distribute their work, does not become collateral damage in the process.

I hope its not illegal that I straight up added myself to the bottom of the list. I do however agree that broad legislation on an infinite and dynamic community such as the internet could have devastating effects on people's ability to speak their minds without fear of being censored or punished. It was a big football weekend, with my hometeam, the New York Giants coming away with a BIG win over the Atlanta Falcons. Hopefully we can take this momentum and dance our way to the Super Bowl! Next up, the defending champions, Green Bay Packers. Bring it.

Whether you think he's a good or bad quarterback, he is a fiery competitor who has the ability to rile up his team and get the win. I hated Tebow during his college years when he used to beat up on my Ohio State Buckeyes, recently my attitude has changed. Yesterday in a complete stunner, he defeated the traditional powerhouse Pittsburgh Steelers in the shortest playoff overtime period in NFL history. I watched his Denver Broncos gallup to victory in a bar filled with Steeler's fans. The look of utter shock on their collective faces was something I will not soon forget. You gotta love playoff football.

WFMU Record Fair

This past slushy Saturday, I down to the annual WFMU Record Fair to get my vinyl fix. On my trek down the entire city was basically empty, however when I entered the Metropolitan Pavilion, it was SWARMING with like-minded wax-centric individuals. After a day of heavy negotiating, I welcomed eight new members to the family.

It was an amazing time. I geeked out hard with a bunch of vendors, collectors and musicians alike. I was lucky to hear the Black Hollies perform while I was there, but I missed one of NYC's most unique treasures, CSC Funk Band perform on Sunday. I've gotta give a shout out to my Oboe Brother (O-broe?), Dave Kadden, who is the only man truly insane enough to funk out on the double-reed devil. Luckily, WFMU posted a few (horribly skippy) videos of the action on their website.

This is the most beautiful song I have heard in such a long time. It goes perfect with today's light Manhattan rain. Over the past year I've become more and more infatuated with the rich Psych history of Africa during the 70's. It must have been such a ridiculous blast to be at the clubs and shows at this time. The problem is most of the bands from that time only have one or two recordings that have survived long enough to let today's listener enjoy them. I have come into such a dilemma with The Elcados, I found only two songs and I've already worn them out and even deep searches come up empty. I guess this period is just filled with beautiful mysteries.

Last Tuesday (9/20) I was down at Highline Ballroom taking in one of #EDAS' reggae favorites, Barrington Levy. This was my second time seeing the man famous for his 'Squbbilys' and 'Whoas.' His famous inflections were showcased all evening and his voice has barely changed since he took Jamaica by storm at the age of only 14.

Listen to his trademark sounds in a live-concert video below, but be forewarned, the bass is "Dangerously" overwhelming.

The other night, the purity of the first football game of the season was soiled when Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly interrupted the game to report on a credible but unconfirmed Terror Threat.

Appropriately enough, New York City is on alert this weekend;

The 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Locked down... Somewhat... Once again...

Forgive me if I thought the whole point of the last 10 Years was to not feel terrorized. Now I can barely leave my house, not because of the threat itself, but because of the influx of tourists and politicos who are in some ways, ripping the actual events of 9/11/01 from their context and repurposing them into whatever form best suits some elephant or donkey's crooked agenda. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I'm not hating on anyone in particular, but I think the true strength shown by us New Yorkers only begun on that fateful Tuesday; it was the continuation to September 12th, then the 13th, then October and November, then the first New Year of 2002 and then onwards to '03; Through the various Wars, and collapses, '05, '06, '07, '08, 'O-bama and the new decade, the attempted attack of Faisal Shahzad and any cowardly copycats, all leading up to today, 10 years later.

The victory is how this enigmatic, dynamic and prismatic Urban Organism got up after taking the worst sucker punch in the country's history, dusted itself off, and went back to work. I guess I'm saying that if going down to Ground Zero and hearing all the names of the innocents who perished provides you with a sort of healing, then please go forth and do so. I just think in a city where everyone lives, loves, and mourns differently, closing down half the city for a memorial, especially while the heroes and first responders sit at home unsure if their next treatment will be covered, kind of brings back an eerily familiar feeling I don't care to relive. I'd rather celebrate September 12, the day the great city rose from the ashes to maintain the most beautiful and diffuse way of life this world has ever known.

If you want to see real evidence that the terrorists lost, pick any other day and go watch the High Schoolers spaz out in Union Square or Old School Rollerbladers skate-dance through Central Park; go to Bryant Park during lunch hour and see all the working stiffs (myself included) using their 60 minutes to smush into a single block of greenery before rushing back to their cubicles so they can afford to do it all over again tomorrow; ride any subway at 4am and watch as half the people drunkenly stagger to get home, while the other half are just leaving theirs, heading to work to make an honest buck.

The feelings surrounding this day are as varied and complex as the people who feel them. I have lived 3,650 days since 9/11, carrying the events I eye-witnessed with me for each and every one of them. I will never forget exactly what happened and exactly how we fought so diligently and emotionally to preserve and protect the security of our culture, I don't need a media circus to help me remember it.

I wish everybody reading this (and even those who aren't) all the comfort and strength a fellow human-being can, but I wish you more than one day's worth, I wish you enough strength to carry on forever, it's all we can do.

I'm not counting on an Authentic Mehican experience, but I am looking forward to some sun and water, baja style eats, reading an e-book about Native America and getting away from the daily grind for a moment. What did you think I was going for?

Love him or hate him, Rod Stewart is one of the best selling artists of time. If you, like me, were born after 1975, you wouldn't know that Ol' Roderick used to wail with the best of them in one of the hardest rocking, hardest partying bands England has known, Faces. Before his catalog became saturated with 80's Soundtrack Ballads and he started trying to bang everybody's Mom (and getting his haircut like them too); he was touring the world in his wrestling-style leotard, blacking out, eating grapes and ruining entire towns of women.

In listening to him as a lead singer I really got to separate him from his reputation and hear how good of a frontman he actually is. Despite his enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his voice projects a gritty timbre that certainly came from the early years of RnB and singers like Otis Redding. Maybe it came from his early days digging graves, but Rod Stewart's soulful sound ranks up there with the best of them.

I spent last night backstage at Bowery Ballroom with Chicago's most rockin' youngins, Filligar. These guys are true students of Rock 'N Roll and have quickly become one of my favorite bands of the day not only because of their timeless sound, but also because they are just cool as hell. We got lost in a one hour interview before they rocked a packed house of schloppy fans into sonic ecstasy, broken leg and all.

Brothers John (Guitar & Vocals), Pete (Drums), and Teddy (Bass) Mathais as well as childhood friend Casey Gibson (Keys), bring a sound foundation of talent and soul to Filligar's live shows and records a like, leaving a trail of hardcore fans behind them as they tour the country. They make a stop tomorrow at the Escape to New York festival (which takes place on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in the Hamptons) before hitting up another Festival in Maine next weekend. If you can't make it out to either, pick up their newest album, The Nerve, to see where their varied musical influences have taken them at this stage of their career. Don't delay, they way these guys talk, they have no plans on standing still for any amount of time, probably best to get caught up in their whirlwind sooner rather than later. Best of luck to Filligar, especially my boy Pete, and I look forward to hearing much, much more about them in the near (or far) future.

I'm semi-just kidding, but the above Native illustration is the cover art for a mega under-appreciated album by Full Blooded Kiowa-Comanche Jesse Ed Davis. Davis, who got his start playing guitar for Taj Mahal, but went on to record with such giants as John Lennon, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne and Keith Moon. Initially dubbed a Session Musician, he finally decided to record his self-titled solo debut in the early 70's. Word on the street is he just brought equal amounts of recording equipment and contraband and invited Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons and Father Time himself, Leon Russell to join him and just let it rip. The product definitely stands the test of time as you will see below. Jesse Ed Davis, another name in a long line of unsung Native American Musical Heroes.

Gosh it's hot out. We just broke a record in Central Park and I'm pretty earlier today I broke a record for fastest getting angry at the heat upon leaving one's house. Let's keep closing out our weeks on a high note with the flavor of the electro-month, SBTRKT.

This British masked-marauder just dropped his debut album last month to a veritable heatwave of his own considering his white-hot reception from critics and artists alike. The album is a contradiction; beautiful old-world instrument sounds juxtaposed with borderline Dubstep production techniques. The sound SBTRKT is able to lay down is a completely elemental human vibe, one that our ancestors have been jamming on for thousands of years. What sets these apart from most ancient rhythms however, is you probably wont hear any other caveman jams in the Clubs this summer. Here is one of hottest singles off the album, Wildfire. The beats are sick, the rhymes are great and whole album sounds like it should be listened to with a snifter of brandy in hand. MK: Is it true you were raised a clown?

NT: Both of my parents were clowns, but I'm agnostic.

MK: You know I’m afraid of clowns. When they eventually revolt against their homo sapien brothers, who’s side are you on?

NT: I'd probably wait it out and see who looks like they're winning and try to pass for that

MK: So you're saying you are a "fair-weather homo sapien?"

NT: I guess so... Are you trying to get me to declare that I am no longer a human? I think your fear is making you into some anti-Clown radical.

MK: Well I don't consider myself anti-anything, but I have no trouble admitting I won't be joining the Million Clown March anytime soon.

MK: How would you describe your show, The Moon, to let’s say, an undiscovered native people living deep within the Jungles of Papua New Guinea?

NT: I'd say, it's kind of like The Muppet Show. You guys have The Muppet Show, right? Oh, Jesus... You guys have Jesus, right? No? Well then I have some Good News for you.
Actually, I'd say that it's a bunch of my friends and I getting together and acting out a story we've written with comedy, music, dance, clown, and other types of guests interspersed. MK: What excites you about the comedy industry?

NT: Right now, we're seeing a major resurgence in the popularity of comedy. This time, it's a lot more varied, and a lot more creative and abstract, rather than the fairly standardized club-style comedy of the last comedy boom in the late '80s. A lot of the so-called "alternative" comedians of the last decade are now creating major television and film comedy, so there's almost an over-abundance of good comedy coming out now. Hopefully it doesn't crash before I find a way to exploit it.

MK: Where do you think you and your partner Bob Walles stack up in terms of famous duos?

NT: I'd like to think we're in between the Righteous Brothers and the Smothers Brothers. But realistically, we probably stack up just above Hall and Oates and just below Snap and Crackle, ever since Pop died.

MK: Who is your dream Moon Musical Guest?

NT: Biz Markie. He's a rapper, DJ, beatboxer, singer, collector, lunatic, and one of the funniest dudes alive. I might explode if I ever see him in person. I hope he reads this, but the rumor is that he's never been on the internet.

MK: Last Question: Are you still mad that I put up a website of Dog T-shirts that say "Nat’s A Bitch"?

NT: Furious!

Welcome back #EDAS pal, Sal, back for another guest post...

"Come Undone" is the 4th track off of the third full length collaboration album (Hawk) between Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell. Both Lanegan and Campbell have developed an exceptional repertoire prior to teaming up for what have been three masterfully composed and poetic tours de force.

Isobel Campbell

Campbell, a multi talented singer of Scottish descent, was formerly a member of Belle & Sebastian, however it did not take long before her celestial vocals found the spotlight on her first solo album under her own name, 2003's Amorino. Currently she has released four solo albums to date, two of which are under the pseudonym The Gentle Waves. Not only does she have an angelic voice, but there is something about her that makes you want to wake up in the same room as her.

Mark Lanegan

Mark Lanegan, a ghost of grunge's past, is probably remembered and endeared by some for his vocals/lyrics in the band he formed in the late 80's, The Screaming Trees. From the start of his career, Lanegan's voice has been one of the most highly recognizable baritones in the business and more often then not, his vocals are a suitable companion to his dark lyrics. Much like Campbell, it did not take long before Lanegan released his first solo album, 1990's Winding Sheet, released on Sub Pop.

In teaming up for this song, the duet have managed to channel the middle ground between heaven and hell, good and evil, dark and light, all while vocalizing over the oscillating piano medley of James Brown's It's a Man's Man's Man's World. However it is not long before that middle ground is lost and the lyrics bring you back to reality where seemingly the characters in the song realize they can't have it both ways, but not before a prolonged struggle.

It is easy to get lost in the sway of the vintage composition, but more rewarding is the story in the lyrics as Mark Lanegan's deep voice pulls Isobel Campbell's soulful whisper to a darker place.

WE MADE IT!

It's now May 23rd and unless Raptured-Earth looks exactly like regular Earth and Rapture-coffee tastes exactly like regular coffee, the world is not over. Even though the battle was not without it's sacrifices I was able live a normal weekend, complete with Dental Appointment (all clean!), tUnE-yArDs concert, and watching the Mets get smacked around by their more affluent local counterparts.

As mentioned above, I spent my Saturday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg with a sublime e-ssociate of mine, Megan, who runs the succulent blog Foodie Can't Fail. Megan turned me on to the genre-shattering work of Merrill Garbus a.k.a tUnE-yArDs before she started turning heads with her dope performance at SXSW. From first listen, I likened it to a Ladysmith Black Mambazo era Paul Simon with a female empowering Tracy Chapman aspect, but those folksters doesn't cover the amount of work Garbus does, layering her own sounds over themselves to fill the concert hall with one-woman wall of sound. With the occasional help of a bassist and a small horn section, her powerful sound was only rivaled by the energy she brought to the stage.

I apologize for the most recent and longest hiatus of my blogging career. Time has been flying by and I've been utilizing almost every moment of it. The first signs of spring have brought forth a bounty of amazing concerts and events to my small and humble towne and I have been taking in more than my fair share.

Before I even begin to get into who I feel are the newest and hottest bands out there right now (not to mention the scoop on the NYC Area Summer Concerts) I would like to bring attention to the beautiful earth where I have spent every second of my life. It seems like nowadays we don't think of our over-arching Earth Mother unless we're holding something with the word Green on the label. Just take some time out today and all days to appreciate this beautiful existence we have been afforded at the direct expense of the environment we share with every organism that has ever been known.

The "King of Hooks," as he was widely known, had been sick for a while after having two strokes and several surgeries, but his legacy as one of the foremost pillars of West Coast Rap will live on. Attraction is a funny thing. Some people like blondes while others like brunettes, never mind the fiery wild cards known as redheads. But why? Well Timmy, it all stems from the basic principle of Sexual Dimorphism, or the physical differences between the male and females in a given species. Take, for example, the noble Peafowl. Peafowl are often mistakenly referred to as a Peacocks, which is actually the name for the male only while the female is dubbed the Peahen. This bird perfectly illustrates the scientific premise of sexual dimorphism.

Sexual Dimorphism rears it's slightly differing male and female heads when peahens simply choose their peacocks based on how impressed they are with these tail-feathers. In the human species we have obviously spawned language and society among other intellectual discourses to deepen and complicate the mating process, but have we really evolved that much past looking at butts? Supposing we haven't, the only difference between us and the birds is that our roles are slightly reversed. Now I'm not calling myself a schlump, but I think many (including this facebook group) would agree that the females are the ones with the glorious tailfeathers.

There's not much to mention about this song, except it's beautiful Afro-Lypso style get interrupted almost right away with a murderous threat. You'd think someone named Pepsi-Orlando would be a little more lyrically tame. Regardless, this gem reflects an extremely colorful musical period in Ghana's history that occurred during the 1960's.

An interesting way to express one's love?

I think so.

If you like what you hear, try to buy this unreal compilation of 1960's Ghana Music entitled Money No Be Sand. It actually took me years to find and since I was able to procure it a few months ago, It has garnered serious airplay in my personal collection.

Sometimes love is not always ok. I'm not sure what the intentions of Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman were when he penned this ode to gross, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had some pretty nasty things on his computer. Up until today I had only listened to this song, but the audio alone made me fear for the young daughters of the 1980's. Seeing a performance set to the words makes me want to call the government. "Little Girls" are made up of all sorts of nice, magical, delicate things and it is perfectly fine to enjoy the precious beauty they contribute to this cold-cold world, but keep it together man. We have a wannabe Lewis Carol over here and it kind of calls the integrity of the entire excellent album into question. Experience the weirdness below, continue to experience it every time you hear the theme to the Simpsons.

This year, instead of putting up a few sappy songs, or even "Songs To Bone To" like I did last year, I have decided to give this Valentine's space to alternative love songs. Now I don't just mean alternative as in gay or lesbian (although this will most likely be represented), but the true meaning of alternative, as in straight up different from the norm, or weird. Yes, we can all agree that the Fab Four's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is an extremely romantic song, as is anything by the Carpenters, Pretenders, Smokey Robinson, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Billy Joel or Savage Garden, but it takes a true wordsmith to express love without falling into the same-old ruined clichés. This week will celebrate those who went out on a limb, and whether it was successful or not, take the road less traveled, towards love.

Take today's song, specifically not only as a throwback to Rasta Mon-Days of old, but more importantly for it's slightly off putting hook. I have heard this song is actually written by the most famous reggae singer ever, Mr. Bob Marley, but this version is performed by Johnny Nash off my favorite soundtrack of all time (you should already know it's The Harder They Come). It begins with a soothing voice serenading you with high fructose lyrics but quickly slides into a chorus that repeats a very odd and fetishistic simile. I don't know what the 'it' is, that he's looking to have rubbed all over him, but I guarantee the next time you look at a jar of jelly... it will be way different.

Who?

In my opinion one of the most underrated musical masterminds (and musical entrepreneurs) of my time.

He first arrived on the scene with the Afghan Whigs in the late 80's, later making way for multiple side projects including The Twilight Singers and Gutter Twins, as well as a solo album titled "Amber Headlights". So who exactly is he? I don't believe I could ever fathom the depths of who Greg Dulli is in his entirety, however some describe him as "the savior of misbehavior", "the golden boy" or "the epitome of cool".

His musical style is ever changing and innovative, especially in more recent years and most notably recognizable on the The Twilight Singers upcoming album "Dynamite Steps" due out February 15, 2011. However, the inspiration of Soul and R&B driven bass and beats are never far behind always waiting to accompany different textures of strings, vocals, and keys that Dulli finds necessary. For one to appreciate all that encapsulates his work over the years, I find it essential to look at where it first started.

"Gentlemen" released October 5th 1993, is the Afghan Whigs fourth full length studio album and their first release on a major label. Enter... the Concept Album. What? A term which is loosely thrown around in the last decade by musicians in the industry who fail to produce an album worthy of its usually epic title. But the Afghan Whigs album "Gentlemen" depicts the meaning of the term to its full extent.

Since the theory of a Concept Album is to craft an entire album into a unified story, therefore, I feel it is inappropriate to describe just one song. Instead I will give a brief description of the entire album from my own interpretation and then post two songs, so you can get a better taste of the bitter flavor that is Greg Dulli.

The album is written in a first person point of view, pertaining to the character's bad relationship-gone worse and reflective of one's own inner destructive self, followed by repent. (Editors Note: This is possibly the deepest line to grace Every Day, Another Song)

I remember after I first listened to this album my reactions were almost exact to that of our blog creator in a personal conversation, "That album is raw as F*ck!" That it is, on more than one level.

Once again, Gentlemen is a concept album and the songs are in a particular order for a reason, meaning it should be listened to in its entirety, but for those of you who want a taste of what Greg Dulli is, here are two songs off the album.

This is one of my new favorite bands. A pair of brothers from Tennessee who sound like a cross between Iggy Pop and Bleach-era Nirvana. Born from the same two person, lo-fi vein as the now defunct White Stripes (who called it quits only 2 days ago after a ridiculously successful career) Jeff The Brotherhood is currently playing shows all over the place, including one in NYC on March 31, so make sure to check out their schedule here. Today is the birthday of one James "The Beard" Beard, who you may remember from last March when he took EDAS for a week-long spin. Don't worry, he brought it back in tip-top shape. A modern day Super-Hero, he is faster than a speeding subway train (pursuant to the current MTA Cutbacks); more powerful than the aforementioned subway train (Once again... budget cuts) and able to grow Tall Beards in a Single-Beard! (even though currently he kicks it baby-smooth) Besides that he loves Space and can rock the shit out of a Vest.

The last time we talked with our brains, he mentioned one of the hardest working duos in history of recorded or performed music, Stax Records' own, Sam and Dave. 30 years ago today, possibly the single most influential man of a generation was shot and killed just a few short blocks from my childhood home. Of course I wasn't born yet, but you can see that the loss is still felt today. His death at the hands of ~~J.D. Salinger~~ Marc David Chapman left a void in his adopted home of New York, as well as the entire world. If I had to describe John Lennon's influence on all mankind, I wouldn't even know where to start, but it ends with his message traveling over any social or geographic barriers. A great example is this Reggae output by Ranking Joe on his album Tribute to John Lennon, released in Jamaica mere months after Lennon's assassination.

The title track is far from the former Beatles' work, style-wise, in fact it's closer to Barrington Levy, but does a good job illustrating his Martyrdom amongst the downtrodden. SURPRISE!! I knew I wouldn't be able to kick this habit Cold Turkey. I wish I could use strikethrough in the title because I am certainly not 25 anymore. Now as a 26 year old everything is different... Just kidding.

I've actually been doing a lot of introspection on this anniversary of my birth, wondering to myself, What exactly, if anything, has changed? Well I'm still here aren't I? If you care, you can time travel to exactly one year ago, when a spontaneous neurotic quarter-life crisis lead me to blogspot to create Every Day, Another Song. Heavily inspired by the concept and lyrics of my legitimate, number one favorite song (despite all my other superlatives, Change is my favorite for sure) I decided to embark on a year long journey. I wish I had a deep and clever, yet succinct lesson that I've learned during this experience, but what can I say? It's Life... All I know is, it goes by wildly fast, but there's music in all of it, if you are listening.

Here are a couple alternate versions of the Song that started it all. The first is an acoustic Jam that takes place with the original Members of Blind Melon, including the late Shannon Hoon, possibly in the previously mentioned Sleepyhouse. The second video is from the band's most recent tour, almost 15 years later, and features Shannon's daughter, Nico on lead vocals. Sorry for all the suspense but I just couldn't think of what to say. It has truly been a pleasure spending the last 365 days with you. Obviously I'm extremely passionate about music and damn proud of it but having the outlet to share my thoughts and inspirations has really taken it to another level. I am sad to announce that this, my 365th consecutive day, a full year after this project was started marks, the end of one chapter and the beginning of another (blissfully less regimented) one. I no longer expect to update this blog Every Day. Fear not because I still plan to post the same awk-thentic streams of consciousness that you may have gotten used to, just with a little more time in between to deepen and fine tune my ideas. So stay tuned and you might see some old favorites, Biggie Sunday, Rasta Mon-Day and the long forgotten Cover Clash make a comeback. Here is one the hardest rocking bands I've ever seen (their early stuff only) and the band I've seen live the most (5 times). Rilo Kiley ended most of the shows I saw with this spectacular song... To this day, listening to it still gives chills.

People always ask me (they never ask me this) "Don't you always get requests from your readers about what songs they want you to post?" Well, interior monologue, I do... in fact that has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project. My love and appreciation of music has inspired others to look inward and share with me the songs and musicians that they are the most passionate about, and that just furthers my interest which, in theory, starts the whole cycle again.

One of EDAS' most (in)famous commenters has a colorful connection to one of music's most unique specimens, Frank Zappa. I bet he even knows about Zappa's days as a Bike Player.

Now my interaction with Zappa is far less deep, in fact my only memorable listening experience occurred in the beginning of my freshman year of college. My ahem 'cliche' ahem long distance relationship ahem 'cliche' ahem with my high school girlfriend ahem 'cliche' ahem was on the outs ahem 'cliche' ahem just around the time that I really began meeting new people ahem 'cliche' ahem and broadening my horizons ahem 'cliche' ahem , especially musically ahem 'cliche' ahem. Before long, our puppy love had fallen victim to the soulless reaper that was infinite members of the opposite sex, and I was ahem 'cliche' ahem pretty bummed. Back then we had a thing called Compact Discs and I popped The Mothers of Invention's album Freak Out and the pure absurdity actually cheered me up. Before long I was back up on the horse. That being said, I hope I don't feel the need to listen to any Zappa in the future, but I still appreciate his zany, post-modern take on Music. If you have been listening at all, you know about Bob Andy. Quantitatively, you may know more about Alton Ellis, but sentimentally and culturally, you should know more about Keith "Bob Andy" Anderson (if you still don't, read my 96th Post). Recently I was pleasantly surprised to see that a favorite magazine of mine, Wax Poetics, came out with a Reggae Issue, but then I was basically floored to see a several page spread on my personal "Reggae Hero." The article is amazing and references all of Bob's influences from Doo Wop stars of the 50's to Sam Cooke to Bob Dylan and beyond. In fact, writer Seb Carayol, who does an extraordinary job, says his collection of Studio One singles Bob Andy's Songbook, "is often considered the island's best songwriting effort of all time." That means a lot when going up Jamaica's Head Honcho, Bob Marley. Anyway I sincerely hope you pick up Wax Poetics, Issue 43, and check it out, it also has articles about other EDAS All-Stars, Alton Ellis, Gregory Isaacs, as well as tons of other key Reggae Kings and Queens. It's bi-monthly so you probably have a few more days to before the next issue comes out, but I would definitely hop to it.

On this, what very well could be the the final Rasta-Monday... hell, ever. I salute Bob Andy and his unparalleled song writing that, although written and recorded in the infancy of Jamaican Sovereignty, still holds true and offers sound advice today, when listened to almost 50 years later on Saturn's Moon Rhea, where we all live.
